The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival), celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (usually in June), is a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition honoring poet Qu Yuan through dragon boat racing, zongzi eating, and other customs.
Originating from the Warring States period, it primarily commemorates Qu Yuan (340–278 BC), a patriotic poet who drowned himself after his state's fall. Villagers raced boats to search for his body and threw rice into the river to protect it, forming the basis of modern traditions.
Dragon Boat Racing: A competitive sport symbolizing the search for Qu Yuan, now practiced globally in universities and international competitions.
Zongzi: Glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo/reed leaves with fillings like dates, beans, or meat, originally used to distract fish from Qu's body.
Protective Rituals: Hanging mugwort/calamus leaves to repel diseases, wearing five-colored strings or scented sachets for warding off evil, and drinking realgar wine.
Recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2009.
Dragon boat racing has evolved into an international sport with standardized rules and professional teams.
